New Dental Clinic Opens at Mt. Carmel

New Dental Clinic Opens on Mt. Carmel Wellness and Community Center Campus
Partnership expands to meet the needs of Trinidad and Las Animas County

TRINIDAD, Colo., Feb 17, 2020 – Mt. Carmel Wellness and Community Center is proud to announce that Salud Family Health Centers, a federally qualified health center (FQHC), has opened a new pediatric and adult dental clinic on its campus. The new clinic opened its doors on February 10, 2020.

The beautiful facility is a testimony to a successful alliance between Salud and Mt. Carmel, showing their dedication to provide quality and affordable healthcare for the community.

Located at 928 Smith Street, the 5,000 square foot dental center was originally built as a home in the 1920s and sold to the Diocese of Pueblo. Building an addition to the residence, the Diocese of Pueblo converted the home to a convent for the Franciscan Sisters in the 1950s. In 2014, Kip Hampden Properties LLP purchased the property with a vision for it to become a dental clinic in the future. Trinidad Construction Group renovated the convent to meet the requirements of Salud’s state-of-the-art design plan.

The dental clinic will provide a convenient and much needed option for children of low-income families with Medicaid insurance. Currently, children of Trinidad and nearby communities that have limited access to regular dental visits and hygiene care, often having to drive to Pueblo or other distances to receive preventative and restorative services from Medicaid-accepting offices.

“I feel very fortunate that Salud is able to provide quality health services to all the communities we serve and especially in Trinidad,” said Salud CEO John Santisteven, a Trinidad native. “I am also grateful for the leadership at the Mt. Carmel Wellness and Community Center for their continued support in improving health outcomes.”

Mt. Carmel Wellness and Community Center opened in July, 2011 and one year later, opened a healthcare clinic onsite. At that time, current Las Animas County Commissioner Felix Lopez was the Chief Operating Officer of Mt. Carmel and grew the Center’s programs and services. In 2018, needing expertise and staffing to meet the demand, Lopez and Mt. Carmel of Colorado President Gina Cimino knew Santistevan was the right partner. Santisteven was raised just across the street from Mt. Carmel where he was baptized and married at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. According to Santisteven, he did not see a dentist until he was twelve years old. He learned first-hand that preventative dental care makes a positive impact for children as they become teens and adults.

Salud Dental Clinic at Mt. Carmel Wellness and Community Center provides a full range of dental services, including general and pediatric dentistry, diagnostic, and oral surgery procedures. The new dental clinic has six dental chairs and serves all ages.
In addition to Medicaid, Salud at Mt. Carmel Wellness and Community Center takes CHP+, Colorado Senior Dental Program, and Delta Dental. Insurance enrollment assistance is available.

“Salud has been a great partner to both Mt. Carmel and to the residents of Trinidad and Las Animas County,” said Randy Gradishar, Corporate Ambassador for Phil Long Enterprise. Gradishar will be attending Salud’s dental clinic’s private open house celebration later this week. Media may register to attend the celebration with the media contact below.
