Trinidad
Las Animas County, Colorado
Trinidad was initially explored by Spanish and Mexican traders, who were drawn to the area for its proximity to the Santa Fe Trail. It was founded in 1862 soon after coal was discovered in the region. Following this was an influx of immigrants looking to capitalize on the natural resource. By the late 1860s, the town had grown to around 1,200 residents. Trinidad was incorporated in 1876, only a couple of months before Colorado became a state.
Now Trinidad is home to over 8,000 residents and offers several wonderful parks, historical sites, and other local activities. At Trinidad Lake State Park, enjoy picturesque camping, hiking, fishing, boating, and an archery range. The Purgatoire River flows through Trinidad and excellent trout fishing access is available in town at Central Park. Take a peaceful walk along the waterway on riverwalk, or journey to historic Kit Carson Park to view the bronze statue of Kit Carson.
